Nitrous Oxide Sedation

If you feel nervous about visiting the dentist, you’re not alone. At our clinic, we offer nitrous oxide sedation, commonly known as happy gas, to help you feel calm and comfortable during your dental treatment.

Nitrous oxide is a safe, fast-acting sedative that is inhaled through a small, comfortable nose mask. Within a few minutes, you’ll begin to feel relaxed and at ease while remaining awake and able to communicate with your dentist throughout your procedure.

Who Can Benefit?

Nitrous oxide sedation may be suitable if you:

  • Experience dental anxiety or fear
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Need a longer or more complex dental procedure
  • Feel nervous about injections or dental treatment
  • Have difficulty sitting comfortably for extended appointments

Our team will assess your medical history and discuss whether nitrous oxide sedation is the right option for you.

What to Expect

Before your treatment, a small mask is placed over your nose, allowing you to breathe a carefully controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. As the sedation takes effect, you’ll feel relaxed, calm, and comfortable.

Although many patients describe a light, floating sensation or a feeling of wellbeing, you’ll remain conscious and able to respond to questions and instructions throughout your appointment.

Once your treatment is complete, the nitrous oxide is stopped and you’ll breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes. The effects wear off quickly, allowing most patients to return to their normal daily activities soon after their appointment.

Is Nitrous Oxide Safe?

Nitrous oxide has been used safely in dentistry for many decades and is one of the most well-established forms of conscious sedation. It is carefully administered and continuously monitored by trained dental professionals to ensure your comfort and safety throughout treatment.

As with any dental procedure, we’ll review your medical history and answer any questions before recommending sedation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be asleep?

No. Nitrous oxide provides conscious sedation, meaning you’ll remain awake and aware but feel significantly more relaxed.

Can I drive home afterwards?

In most cases, yes. Because the effects wear off quickly after breathing oxygen at the end of your appointment, most patients are able to drive themselves home. Your dentist will advise you if any exceptions apply.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. Nitrous oxide is commonly used for children who are anxious or require extra support during dental treatment. Your dentist will determine whether it is appropriate based on your child’s individual needs.

Are there any side effects?

Most patients tolerate nitrous oxide very well. Mild side effects such as dizziness or nausea usually resolve quickly once the gas is stopped.

Our goal is to make every dental visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible. If you’ve been avoiding treatment because of anxiety or fear, nitrous oxide sedation may help you receive the care you need with greater confidence.
