Pregnancy and Dental

Are you concerned about your oral health during your pregnancy?

We’ve got you covered!

Pregnancy can lead to dental issues for some women including gum disease and increased risk for tooth decay. During pregnancy your increased hormones can affect your body’s response to plaque. Therefore, it is important to maintain your 3-6 monthly check up and cleans during your pregnancy.

Pregnancy does not automatically damage your teeth, however pregnancy may lead to dental problems for some women. Keeping up with your oral hygiene during pregnancy may reduce the risk of developing dental problems during your pregnancy.

You are less likely to develop dental problems during your pregnancy if your oral hygiene habits already include

  1. Brushing twice a day
  2. Flossing daily
  3. 3-6 monthly check ups with your dentist

During pregnancy some women develop gestational diabetes. During this period, high sugar levels in the blood can increase the expectant mother’s risk of developing oral infections, gum diseases, tooth decay, dry mouth and fungal infections.

Women looking to become pregnant should have a full dental check up prior. It is important to inform your dentist if you are pregnant, as this doesn’t only affect your oral health, but it can affect your dental care. For example, your dentist may choose not to take x-rays until after the birth or go to extra precautions to ensure the safety of your child.

It is recommended to increase your calcium intake during your pregnancy. Sufficient calcium will protect your bone mass, teeth and meet the nutritional needs of your developing baby.

Tell your dentist about any gum problems that you might have. Switch to a softer toothbrush and brush your teeth regularly, at least twice every day. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride (if you’re not already doing so) to help strengthen your teeth against decay.
